Installing a radiant in-floor heating system is a proven method to achieve energy-efficient, comfortable warmth throughout your home. While the process is best handled by professionals for large-scale projects, understanding the fundamentals helps homeowners make informed decisions. This guide focuses on the hydronic (water-based) system, which is the most common for whole-house installations.
First, plan the layout. Calculate the heat loss of each room to determine tubing spacing—typically 6 to 12 inches apart. Closer spacing provides more heat per square foot. Draw a manifold location near the boiler or water heater, allowing easy access for future maintenance.
Next, prepare the subfloor. Install rigid foam insulation boards over a clean, dry concrete slab (for ground-contact floors) or above a wooden subfloor. Radiant heating efficiency is lost without proper insulation, so use at least 1.5 inches of foam. Tape the seams with foil tape to eliminate air gaps.
Lay the PEX tubing (cross-linked polyethylene) according to your plan. Secure the tubing to the foam insulation using plastic clips or track patterns. Avoid sharp bends that could kink the pipe. For each room, run a continuous loop from the manifold and back, ensuring no joints are buried in the floor (all connections must be at the manifold).
After laying the tubing, pressure-test the system with air or water at 80-100 psi for 24 hours to confirm no leaks. Then, pour a thin layer of cement-based gypsum (gypcrete) or self-leveling concrete over the tubing. This encases the pipes and creates a thermal mass that stores heat. Alternatively, for wooden subfloors, install aluminum heat-transfer plates under the PEX before covering with subfloor panels or tile backer board.
Finally, connect the manifold to the boiler. Add a circulator pump, expansion tank, and a mixing valve to control water temperature (typically 100-140°F). Fill the system with water mixed with antifreeze (if needed) and bleed air from the loops. Test the thermostat zones by setting them to 68°F and verifying even floor warmth.
Maintenance is minimal: check system pressure monthly and inspect the pump annually. With proper installation, a radiant floor system lasts 50+ years and reduces heating costs by 20-30%. If you are retrofitting an existing home, consider slim-profile electric mats under tile flooring as an alternative, but for new construction, hydronic remains the gold standard for whole-home comfort.
