This makes Type S the go-to choice for load-bearing structures, retaining walls, and projects below grade, like foundations and manholes. Its stronger bond resists soil pressure and heavy loads. However, it is less flexible than Type N, so it is not recommended for very soft stone or historic restoration.
Type M mortar is the strongest, with a minimum compressive strength of 2,500 psi. It uses more cement and less lime—generally one part cement, one-quarter part lime, and three parts sand. This mix is incredibly hard and is best for heavy-duty applications like driveways, sidewalks, and high-load bearing walls. Due to its low flexibility, Type M can crack if used on softer materials or in areas with significant movement.
To select the right mortar, consider the load, location, and material. For most residential exterior walls, Type N offers the best balance. For foundations or retaining walls, choose Type S.
