The critical flaw in many safety programs is the assumption that a fall will not happen, or if it does, emergency services will arrive quickly. In reality, rescue after a fall must occur within minutes. Medical research shows that suspension in a harness can lead to blood pooling in the legs, reduced circulation to the brain, and loss of consciousness in as little as 10 to 20 minutes. A fallen worker who remains suspended without rescue can suffer irreversible harm. Therefore, a predetermined rescue strategy must be part of any comprehensive fall protection plan.
An effective rescue strategy includes multiple components: identification of potential fall hazards, selection of appropriate rescue equipment (such as self-rescue lanyards, winches, or aerial lifts), and training for on-site personnel. It is not enough to have the gear; workers must be trained to execute a rescue quickly and safely. Drills and simulations ensure that everyone knows their role, reducing panic and confusion when seconds count.
Moreover, rescue plans should account for the specific work environment. In confined spaces, on towers, or over water, the rescue method will differ. Self-rescue may be possible for some, while assisted rescue using mechanical devices or a designated rescue team is required for others.
